Congressman Wittman Spanked Into Submission by Tea Party Controlled House Speaker

Reacting to the news, from the Hill newspaper, that self-proclaimed GOP centrists won’t force a vote on a clean continuing resolution or “CR,” Marc Broklawski, Chair of the First Congressional District Democratic Committee, issued the following statement:

“Congressman Wittman can’t have it both ways – he’s either with Virginia families, who want an end to this government shutdown, or with Senator Ted Cruz and the rest holding our economy hostage.”

“At the very moment when people within Virginia’s First District are looking to him for leadership to end this totally unnecessary government shutdown, Congressman Wittman instead gets spanked into submission by his Tea Party-controlled House Speaker, John Boehner. Why isn’t he fighting hard for his constituents who have been so severely affected by this Tea Party Republican-manufactured crisis? It’s time for Congressman Wittman to man up and make good on his promise to vote for a clean CR and debt limit bill.”

The First Congressional District runs from Fauquier and Prince William to Newport News, with tens of thousands of residents dependent on the federal government for jobs and services.

Congressman Wittman Voted to “Block Vote on Re-Opening Government. Congressman Wittman voted to block consideration of a vote on a clean government funding resolution. According to Talking Points Memo, “The House rejected Wednesday an effort by House Democrats to put a clean temporary spending bill on the floor, closing one opportunity to re-open the federal government.” Following the vote, Fox News reporter Chad Pergram tweeted “House rejects effort to consider clean CR to re-open gov’t on procedural vote. 230 to 194.” [HJ Res 59, Vote #512, 10/02/13; Talking Points Memo, 10/02/13; Twitter, 10/02/13]
