Flip-Flop Alert: Rep. Wittman Approved Rule Re-do to Cause GOP Shutdown

Since the Republican shutdown began, Congressman Wittman has been saying that he “would vote for a clean CR if one could be brought to the floor.”  What he hasn’t told us is that on September 30 he voted to shut the government down. When he voted to rig House rules in favor of the Tea Party caucus, Wittman put politics ahead of First District families by providing veto power to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor over bringing a clean CR up for a vote on the House floor.

Congressman Wittman continues to maintain that he supports a clean Continuing Resolution (CR) funding bill to reopen the government, but he has opposed each and every opportunity to do so – siding continuously with his fellow Tea Party members. In addition forcing the shutdown in the first place, he has voted 12 times against reopening the government and he refuses to sign a discharge petition to bring a clean CR to the House Floor.

“Congressman Wittman recently took to the House Floor to parrot the obvious: ‘Washington is Broken,’” said Marc Broklawski, the Chair of Virginia’s First Congressional District Democratic Committee. “‘Washington is Broken’ because you broke it, Congressman!”

“Instead of working to end this Republican-manufactured crisis, Congressman Wittman continues to be pulled by the strings of his Tea Party puppeteers,” said Broklawski. “Congressman Wittman went along with this GOP shutdown and voted to hold First district families hostage.”

“Congressman Wittman tries to butter his bread on both sides. He can’t say that he supports a clean CR to reopen the government when he was one of the nebbishes for shutting it down in the first place. Since then he voted 12 times to keep it shuttered. To top it off, he says he opposes the discharge petition to force a vote to reopen the government.”

“First District families aren’t buying what Congressman Wittman is selling anymore. This destruction has gone on too long. It’s time to reopen the government and honor America’s debts.”

Congressman Wittman Has Voted Twelve Times Against Efforts to Re-Open the Government. Congressman Rob Wittman has voted twelve times against efforts to vote on a clean government funding resolution by allowing consideration of the Senate-passed continuing resolution. [H Res 370, Vote #509, 10/02/13; HJ Res 59, Vote #512, 10/02/13; HR 3230, Vote #515, 10/03/13; HJ Res 72, Vote #517, 10/03/13; H Res 371, Vote #519, 10/04/13; HJ Res 85, Vote #521, 10/04/13; HJ Res 75, Vote #523, 10/04/13; HJ Res 77, Vote #527, 10/07/13; HJ Res 84, Vote #529, 10/08/13; HJ Res 90, Vote #536, 10/09/13; HJ Res 79, Vote #539, 10/10/13; HJ Res 76, Vote #541, 10/11/13]

Congressman Wittman Forces Government Shutdown By Changing Rules. Congressman Rob Wittman voted the night of September 30 to change a standing house rule, which would have allowed the Senate’s clean continuing resolution (CR) to proceed to a vote on the House floor by a motion by any member to end the gridlock. Instead, the rule was changed to allow only the House Majority Leader Eric Cantor to offer such a motion (Source: TPM).

Congressman Wittman Won’t Force ‘Clean’ CR Vote. Congressman Wittman indicated that he would not sign on to a discharge petition circulated in the House, which would force a vote on a clean CR and potentially end the government shutdown (Source: The Hill).
